Learn, exchange, grow, and serve. The U.S. Department of State offers many programs for non-U.S. citizens wishing to come to the U.S. for cultural, educational, or professional exchange. These programs are augmented by local opportunities in countries around that world that allow non-U.S. citizens to explore U.S. culture and the English language.
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international education exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
The Humphrey Fellowship Program brings accomplished mid-level professionals from around the world to the U.S. for a year of study and professional development. The Humphrey Fellowship is a non-degree program. Fellowships are awarded competitively to candidates with excellent academic and professional qualifications, as well as a commitment to public service. Fellowships are available only in specific fields: Public Policy and Administration, Law and Human Rights, Communications and Journalism, Educational Administration, Planning and Policy , Agricultural and Rural Development, Natural Resources, Environmental Policy, and Climate Change and Public Health Policy and Management.
Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI)
The Young African Leaders Initiative, or YALI, is not just a fellowship, or an online community, or a place to go for regional leadership training. YALI is all three!
The YALI Mandela Washington Fellowship brings emerging leaders from all across Africa together on American university campuses for a 6-week intensive academic and leadership institute in either civic leadership or business and entrepreneurship tracks.
Pan African Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP)
The Pan African Youth Leadership Program (PAYLP) supports long-range U.S. foreign policy priorities by offering secondary school students (ages 15-18) and adult educators the opportunity to explore themes such as entrepreneurship, civic education, youth leadership and economic development, and respect for diversity.
International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP)
Celebrating its 80th anniversary in 2020, is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. The goal of the IVLP is to provide firsthand knowledge about U.S. society, culture, and politics, while cultivating lasting relationships. By connecting current and emerging foreign leaders with their American counterparts, IVLP fosters lasting relationships and helps strengthen U.S. engagement with countries around the world.
The United States supports international education and welcomes foreign students and exchange visitors. Before applying for a visa, students and exchange visitors must be accepted by their schools or program sponsors.
